COLLEGE TRANSITION
Most of the students who graduate from Holbrook Indian School (HIS) and plan to go to college are first generation students, meaning that they are the first in their families to attend a tertiary education institution, such as community college or university. However, being a trailblazer comes with its own set of challenges.
Many of our students believe the lie about themselves that says they cannot succeed in higher education. When they struggle in college and eventually drop out, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. If students do not have a support system, it makes a successful college experience so much harder. The College Transition program provides graduating HIS students with a year of transition and a support system to help them adjust to college life.
Once a student has graduated from HIS, they can apply to be a part of the College Transition program. If they are accepted, they will live on campus with a staff member. This gives them someone who can look out for them and mentor them. Whenever they do not have scheduled classes, students work part time, either on campus or in the town of Holbrook.
Students in the program have regular one-on-one meetings with the vice principal. During these conversations, they receive help with registering for classes, exploring degree or trade options, and figuring out a trajectory for their life.
Having the students stay on campus presents a huge advantage. The staff become a second family and mentors that help the students gain the motivation to succeed. This provides another level of support for the students as they work hard to break the cycle of poverty and become successful.
