The week of August 28, 2022, has been a sad week for us here at Holbrook Indian School. HIS student Kiarra Alma Gordon was killed and six others were injured in a bus accident during a field trip to Window Rock, Arizona.
Kiarra was in the 11th grade and was loved and admired by her family and her classmates. The entire campus community regarded her with affection. HIS Nation - A Wonderful People
Sam Hubbard is a Navajo who works full-time at Hoblrook Indian School teaching Navajo Government and Navajo Language among other classes. Initially coming to HIS as a bible worker and then later as a bible teacher, Sam moved to Holbrook, Arizona in 2006 and has since been a beacon in the Navajo community, running an evangelistic radio station among other ventures. He is often helping many of our non-native staff connect and better relate to Navajos and other tribes.
Read to find out more about how Sam came to HIS, a little about the classes he teaches, and insight into the Navajo culture.
HIS Nation - The Bruce Legacy
With experience in auto mechanics and welding, Mr. Bruce accepted the position of industrial arts teacher at HIS back in 2009. With his wife Pam, Fred moved to Arizona to accept his new role but had ideas on even more. “I told them that if I came I would be interested in starting a horsemanship program.” Soon after his arrival at HIS, Fred’s proposal to the school board was approved. The rest is history.
Fred and Pam are two of the longest-tenured employees. I sat down with Fred and Pam to ask them about their experience at HIS over the last twelve years. Read on to get a glimpse into Holbrook Indian school through their experience.

Read this HIS Nation blog to find out what their decisions were, and to see what other designs (beyond our formal programs) are in the works to help our students prepare for life after high school.
