OUTDOOR SCHOOL

The Outdoor School program at Holbrook Indian School (HIS) consists of one week of classes held in the great outdoors. Every year, the 8th- through 12th-grade students help to plan and coordinate the details of the trip. The students travel to one of five locations that are rotated through every year: Grand Canyon National Park, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, and one city trip to San Diego that includes a day of tide-pooling at La Jolla Beach. For many of the students, the trip to San Diego is their first time seeing the ocean and navigating a big city.

Throughout the week, teachers and park rangers teach courses that include photography, birdwatching, ecology, oceanography, painting, fire science, and more. The Outdoor School program plays a vital role in allowing our students to see unique places, get out of their comfort zones, learn new things, and bond with classmates and staff members.

The 1st- through 7th-grade students are not left out. They participate in the Elementary Experience—a week of classes alongside camping, swimming, horseback riding, hiking, and day trips.

Students return from Outdoor School and Elementary Experience with happy memories. Their responses reflect the program’s success:

“We made memories that will last us a lifetime!”

“I learned that God is with me through the good and tough situations.”

“Outdoor School should happen twice a year!”
