HIS Nation - Summer Program Returns Strong
Summer Program Returns Strong
Eleven students returned to campus on June 7 to spend six weeks at our summer program, which continues until July 16. This was after a hiatus last summer due to COVID-19.
This year’s program brings some new elements, making the experience more like a summer camp than previous years. Each week features a different “camp” seminar with guests coming in to share new skills and experiences with our students.
In this edition of HIS Nation, we share some of this year’s summer experience as well as some summer experiences from times past.
THE REFLECTION SECTION - 75 YEARS OF STORIES LIKE THESE
In celebration of our 75th year anniversary, we continue to share moments and interesting facts in our history. In this edition, we look back at 2018 during year two of our “Summer Leadership Program,” as it was called at the time.
SOS Foundation volunteers joined students to paint dorm rooms. This was the start of what would be an eventful summer.
Summer 2021
Health and Wellness
During week two of our 2021 summer camp, Wildwood Center for Health Evangelism (Wildwood CHE) came all the way from Wildwood, GA, to share seminars on nutrition and common diseases, mental health, hydrotherapy, herbs, and cooking class.
Survival Camp
The third week followed with a wilderness survival camp from the Wildwood CHE team.
Students learned basic wilderness survival skills like starting a campfire.
Music Camp
We are in week four as this article is being written. The students are blessed to have individuals from the Institute of Young Musicians for Christ (IYMC) visit to share piano and guitar lessons.
Other camps included in the program are volleyball, horseback riding, mountain biking, and a new filmmaking camp.
Your support makes this summer experience a reality. By giving to the summer program, you help to provide a haven for our students during the summer months.
Thank you.
Student Short Film
This is a short film that a few of our students who attended the summer program in 2021 worked on.
Students participated in a week-long filmmaking camp at Holbrook Indian School (HIS), where they learned the principles of filmmaking including story, conflict, audio-visual tools and techniques and basic skills in problem solving for a making a film.
This short is based on a true story that Kayla (the protagonist in the film) had personally experienced and suggested during one of our brainstorming sessions. It is perhaps a common experience that many can relate to.
